Guide to the Software Development Process 2021

Software Development Process

Every business requires customized software for brand promotion and getting a competitive edge. The software development process has evolved with the changing needs and advancements in new-age digital technologies. Developers now focus on speed, security,  and efficiency of the software.

Hiring a reputable software development company is critical to getting high-quality software solutions suited to your business requirements. Experienced software developers follow a robust, systemic software development process leading to the development of quality software products without wastage of time, money, and efforts.

Each software product development process undergoes seven stages or a series of steps known as the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC). The sequence of these steps may differ based on the development goals and size of the project and team.
  1. Conceptualization and Analysis
In this planning stage, developers lay down a suitable software development plan. Focusing on the project scope, they develop project plans, procurement requirements, cost estimations, and ensure that the team understands this. After the planning stage, they have a well-documented Statement of Work (SOW).
  2. Developing Product Architecture
The IT team analyzes the feasibility and get complete requirements for the project from business stakeholders and Subject Matter Experts (SME). Based on the development methodology like agile, waterfall, Scrum or Lean, the output of this stage will be different. Developers come out with a list of backlog tasks to be performed or all requirements needed for the project development.
  3. Design and Prototyping
After listing all requirements, the next stage is to design prototypes or create wireframes that show the flow and functionality of different components of software project. In this stage, developers may develop simple wire frames or full-fledged prototypes and get usability testing for valuable feedback.
  4. Software Development
This is the most important stage in which software developers write clear and flawless codes for operating systems, web and mobile applications. Based on the SOW and prototype the project manager, developers, and designers work together to come up with quality software that fulfills business goals and requirements.
  5. Testing and Quality Assurance
Before the implementation of the software, testers of renowned software development company need to test and fix bugs during development and post-development. They use advanced UX tools for usability testing and get feedback from users. With code quality, unit testing, performance testing, and security testing, developers come up with a quality product ready for deployment.
  6. Deployment
The operation team deploys fully-functional and flawless software using an automated deployment model or Application Release Automation (ARA) tool.
  7. Operations and Maintenance
The software developers’ tasks do not end with the launching of software. With the increasing usage, people may request new features or functionalities or they may find bugs. Besides the basic maintenance, developers need to remove bugs and add new features for enhanced customer satisfaction.
Some of the popular methodologies used for software development processes are enumerated below:-
  • Waterfall
  • Agile
  • Feature-Driven Development
  • Lean
  • V-Shaped
  • Spiral
With the evolving business needs, increasing cyber-crimes and new technological developments like IoT, AR, and AI, software developers need to incorporate innovative methodology and tools for quality products in 2021. Some key trends and technologies to gain more power in the next year are big data computation, progressive web apps, AI expansion, native app development, the internet of things and human augmentation.
